Artist's Comments

I put this together because I, too, had lost my bearings in :Usulav:'s Gearworld. I thought i'd post it; it may be of help/use to others. Scale is non-existent, and it only covers rooms up until 11/03/2005.
The colored letters are where the map would overlap, so i just moved that part of the drawing. The rooms are numbered (in purple). They are:
1. The torn wall- Eland's entrance. :2. the alcoves- "the chicken goes here" :3. Muskrat. :4. Clockwork hive. :5. Overgrown end of cooridor. :6. Room with degraded mural and puddle. :7. Coordor ending w/ two pipes and a valve. :8. Red Frog. :9. Gear lily pads. :10. The moving statues. :11. Hall of Dog Armour. :12. The (1st) Door that Appeared. :13. Stairwell leading to Origami Crane. :14. Beveled Cooridor, left side. Ends with Up arrow. :15. Paper Cyclone. :16. The (2nd) Room that Appeared (found by Heinrich). :17. Cooridor with grille and mural (avacado comet). :18. Down the shaft- pipes and water. :19. End of the Beveled hall. :20. Sea Cave. :21. Water Garden. :22. Room of Junk. :23. Room that Disappears- Egg Incident. :24. 17 empty rooms. :25. Deer Cooler. :26 Box Rooms-"Eat it, Larry!"-Steamjacks. :27. Hopscotch Cathedral. :28. Gong room. :29. Three rooms-pig skeleton, gears and axle, test tubes. :30. Brick passage. :31. Headless statues. :32. Bone plants. :33. Bean room. :34. Room with stone egg. :35. Ichthyosaur in the wall.

This looks about right...even I don't have all that clear a map in my head, mind you!

there are several places in particular where i know i'm just making assumption/totally confused. First of all, the ornamental door may be in the other direction. Second, the bee room or the muskrat room, or both, may be on the opposite side of the cooridor. And the beveled cooridor could slant the other way, for all i know. Plus, those u-shaped walkways confuse me.

Wow. As a fellow gearworld fan (and addict), this is a big help. It must have taken some work. Thanks.

thanks! i'm glad it's useful. I know it's a little out-dated by now, but maybe it'll make keeping track of new rooms easier. I just wish there was more Gearworld to read...>sigh<

Yeahah...I just impulsively decided to read all of it up to date a while ago, so for two days I had a slew of Gearworld. I reveled. But now I have to wait :shakefist:

Glad it was helpful. Good luck with yours. I'm sure there are different ways of arranging the rooms...it would be interesting to see another take on it.

This map is a bit of a double-edged sword. It does diminish somewhat the unadulterated mystery of having random rooms seemingly appear out of nowhere in a way that defies any form of physical manifestation, such as this map.

However, even though that quality of pure imagination is diminished a little by wretching it into a physical, recorded form, it allows you to appreciate the sheer complexity of the place, especially when trying to imagine it in three dimensions.

In the end, it all balances out. Even though there's a certain special quality of having something exist only in your head, mapping it out like this does not guarantee that the mystery goes away. Seeing a ghost you thought was there is ultimately no less terrifying, just in a different way.

Sorry, I'm rambling. Statements about the Gearworld are never simple. I'll have to keep this handy if I ever reread the Gearworld journal. Great work!
